This year, I have designed and edited four exciting and vastly different titles for Playlab Press.
The Pipe Manager, a graphic novel created and adapted from the live dance/theatre work by performing artist Lisa O'Neill and her creative team, including illustrator XTN and Peter Berkahn. It is the story of a woman and her rather unusual experience as a pipe manager at the Peers Pipe Company. The Pipe Manager is an illustrated record of a dance theatre piece that, just like a text-based play, can be studied and enjoyed.
Bison and Colder, two powerful plays by Lachlan Philpott. Bison is witty, confronting and honest in its take-no-prisoners look at the real lives of today's gay men, while Colder explores the infinite unknowns surrounding missing persons and the fog of purgatory that engulfs those left behind.
April's Fool by David Burton is a verbatim play based on the real-life events of Toowoomba teenager, Kristjan Terauds. In April 2009, two weeks short of his nineteenth birthday, he died due to complications from illicit drug use. Using the words of Kristjan's friends and family, interviewed over many months, and inspired by the journal of his father, David Burton has dramatised a powerful story of love, loss and sadness, with touching humour.
Bustown by Lachlan Philpott and Desiree Din and the Red Forest by Maxine Mellor, a dual publication. "bustown moves us into a time when silly television shows, international terrorism, and fast food are sweet and very distant memories that must be kept alive, for the sake of having a history, because we are animals that understand there must always be somewhere else than here," Will Eno. Facing problems in her home life, young Desiree Din creates the Red Forest, an imaginary world where strange mutant creatures seek Desiree as their leader in their mission to stop a dangerous contamination. The play reminds us what it's like to be young and powerless in a rapidly changing world.
These plays can be purchased by contacting Playlab or through the AustralianPlays.org website.
*Play descriptions compiled from information on the back cover of each play.
